30 Jan 2025

A consultation workshop was co-hosted in Windhoek with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to present a diagnostic of inequality in Namibia to government, business, labour union and civil society representatives.

ACEIR researchers at the South Africa node have been working on this study since 2024 as one of several ILO pilots in different countries to develop comprehensive and integrated policy frameworks to reduce and prevent inequities in the workplace.

The purpose of the workshop was to share the findings of the report and to obtain feedback, and to stimulate a policy discussion on how best to address the high levels of inequality in Namibia’s labour market.

The team is led by Prof. Vimal Ranchhod, and includes Dr Muna Shifa and Haajirah Esau from ACEIR, as well as Dr Alfred Mukong from the University of Namibia and Mally Likukela from Twilight Capital Consulting.

Overall, the research was received positively. The participants were interested and engaged, the debates were lively, and the researchers have received useful and constructive suggestions. They will now be updating and revising the draft report prior to finalising the findings.

Participants’ feedback and the policy discussions will help inform the development of a comprehensive and integrated strategy to reduce inequality in Namibia.
