Seminar series on African inequalities

Starting in August 2025, ACEIR is hosting a series of hybrid seminars on African inequalities with presentations by members of the ACEIR teams.
The seminars focus on some of the dynamics of inequalities on the African continent and aim to contribute research and policy perspectives on these. Each seminar is informed by chapters that ACEIR researchers published in Inequalities in sub-Saharan Africa: Multidimensional perspectives and future challenges.
This publication spans many dimensions of socio-economic inequalities and includes chapters on policies and ways to address inequalities in the context of Africa. The book aims to shape global discussions and discourses on Africa’s inequality challenges and was published by the World Bank and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) in January 2025. It was edited by the AFD’s Dr Anda David and Dr Rawane Yasser, and ACEIR’s Prof. Murray Leibbrandt and Prof. Vimal Ranchhod (SALDRU, University of Cape Town) .
The first seminar in the serious focused on inequalities in human capital and labour market outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa and was presented by Prof. Vimal Ranchhod, the head of ACEIR’s South Africa research node, earlier this week.
The next three seminars will discuss:
- 3 September: Inequalities in migration and social mobility in Africa;
- 17 September: Gender inequalities in Africa; and
- 29 October: Africa’s sustainable growth in the context of climate change, poverty reduction, and inequality.
A policy discussion on African inequalities to round off the seminar series is planned for November.
The seminars are hosted jointly with SALDRU as part of their weekly seminar series. The forthcoming ones will be announced for registration via the ACEIR newsletter (sign up) and social media channels.
