How can we think about the links between inequality and climate change? How can labour markets adapt to net-zero trajectories? How can we address the issue of inequalities in emissions between and within countries? What are the challenges and opportunities for just transitions?

These critical and contemporary issues will be explored at the international conference on Inequality, Work, and Nature: Strategic Dilemmas and Policy Resolution that will take place in Cape Town, South Africa on 8 and 9 November 2023. The two-day gathering will bring together researchers, development practitioners, and civil society and government players to discuss the interactions between inequalities and climate change and their impact on development.

The event is a collaboration between the Research Facility on Inequalities of the European Union and Agence Française de Développement, the South African Presidency, and the hub of the African Centre of Excellence for Inequality Research (ACEIR, hosted by the University of Cape Town on behalf of the African Research Universities Alliance).

This interactive and innovative dialogue aims to identify explicit compromises to build a resilient response to climate change in line with a just transition within the framework of sustainable economies.

Day 1 of the conference showcases research on the strategic dilemmas that appear when designing long-term development trajectories that are both ecologically and socially sustainable.

Day 2 engages high-level government officials and practitioners from especially the Global South to deliberate on specific and meaningful concessions aimed at shaping policy solutions.

Several conference side events will take place during the week of the conference.

Space is limited for in-person attendance. Registration closes on 26 October 2023.

See the conference website for the agenda, list of speakers, and in-person registration and livestream (all sessions on both days) details.
