Gabriel Espi-Sanchis

Gabriel Espi-Sanchis is a Labour Economist who has worked and studied at both the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand. His research at the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU), University of Cape Town, in past years has included work on employment outcomes and dynamics during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with a project on labour regulation and informal work in sub-Saharan Africa. Following his research interest in South Africa’s informal economy, he is persuing a doctoral degree at the University of Cape Town. His PhD research will investigate employment responses to household income shocks, with a focus on the role of informal employment and local labour market conditions in determining how people respond to shocks.
