The Africa-Europe Cluster of Research Excellence in Inequalities, Poverty, and Deprivation (CoRE-IPD) will be officially launched as part of its inaugural summer school programme.

The CoRE-IPD is one of 20 Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence that bring together top researchers from the African Research Universities Alliance and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities to bolster indigenous African research capabilities and foster equitable cross-continental collaborations on societal and scientific challenges.

The CoRE-IPD addresses the scientific challenge of reducing inequality to alleviate poverty and deprivation in Africa.

The Cluster’s ARUA partners are the University of Ghana, the University of Nairobi (Kenya), and the University of Cape Town (South Africa); and The Guild partners are Aarhus University (Denmark), the University of Göttingen (Germany), and the University of Groningen (the Netherlands).

Scheduled to speak at the launch are:

  • Sean Rowlands, The Guild Senior Policy Officer, whose primary role is to support the Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence initiative and advocate for funding this model sustainably.
  • CoRE-IPD co-leads Prof. Robert Lensink (University of Groningen) and Prof. Murray Leibbrandt (University of Cape Town).
  • The Executive Director of the African Economic Research Consortium, Prof. Victor Murinde.
  • University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Giama Gitahi, and Prof. Damiano K. Manda from the university’s Department of Economics and Development Studies.

The CoRE-IPD 2024 summer school runs from 15 – 19 July and focuses on the roots of inequality, poverty, and deprivation in Africa. It is taking place at the University of Nairobi.
