Emeritus Professor David Lam

David Lam is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Economics and Research Professor Emeritus in the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan, USA. He served as Director of the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research from 2015 to 2021. He is Honorary Professor of Economics at the University of Cape Town and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He has worked extensively in Brazil and South Africa, where his research analyses links between education, labour markets, and income inequality. He has served as President of the Population Association of America and on the Council of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). He was a member of the Committee on Population of the US National Academy of Sciences, and has served as an advisor or consultant to the World Bank, the US National Institutes of Health, the United Nations Population Division, and the United Nations Development Programme.
