The African Inequality Review (AIR) is a flagship, multi-country research initiative advancing knowledge on inequality and inclusive development across Africa.

AIR is jointly led by ACEIR, the International Inequalities Institute (III) at the London School of Economics (LSE), the United Nations University – World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), and the World Bank.

The Review builds on the influential models of the Deaton Review and the Latin American and Caribbean Inequality Review. Bringing together leading African and international scholars, AIR will:

  • generate new evidence on inequality across Africa,
  • strengthen comparative analysis across countries and contexts,
  • improve access to inequality data and research, and
  • support policy engagement and decision-making.

A steering committee and a high-level panel of experts guide the research agenda, ensuring academic rigor, policy relevance, and strong African leadership. The steering committee comprises Andrew Dabalen (World Bank), Francisco Ferreira (International Inequalities Institute, LSE), Murray Leibbrandt (ACEIR, University of Cape Town), and Rodrigo Oliveira (UNU-WIDER).
